What makers say about vinegar

Vinegar descaling by maker
MakerVinegar OK?What the maker describes
Philips (HD7450/20 and HD7584/53)Yes: any liquid descaler or white household vinegar (4% acetic acid). Not powders or tablets.Fill the tank with white vinegar, a paper filter in the holder, brew until empty, cool 3 minutes, then three fresh-water cycles or until no vinegar taste or smell.

Proctor Silex 12-cup (43687) guideYes.1 cup (237 ml) of plain white vinegar in place of water for one brew cycle, no coffee or filter. Run 30 seconds, stop, wait 30 minutes, finish the cycle, then brew fresh water.
De'LonghiNot recommended for espresso machines. Can leave lingering odours and, over time, may be too harsh for some internal components.
NespressoNo.Use the Nespresso Descaling Kit. Vinegar and store-bought descalers may damage the machine.
KeurigNot described. The guides we read name Keurig Descaling Solution.

Hamilton Beach, Mr. Coffee, Ninja and Bonavita manuals were not among the ones we read: if you own one, use its manual. The ratios above come from different machines, so do not average them.

Vinegar descale: four stages
  1. Prepare. Empty the machine, rinse the carafe and filter basket, and let it cool. Remove a charcoal water filter if there is one (Cuisinart).
  2. Mix. Use the ratio in your own manual. No coffee.
  3. Run a cycle and pause. Start a brew, stop it after about 30 seconds or halfway, and wait 30 minutes if your manual says to (Proctor Silex and Cuisinart both do). Then finish.
  4. Rinse. Run fresh water through. Philips says three cycles or until the water no longer tastes or smells of vinegar. Cuisinart says one full cycle.
  5. Wash the parts. Philips says to clean all parts with liquid soap or in a dishwasher.

How often

The pages we read give no single interval. Philips says to descale "regularly", and Cuisinart suggests testing your water hardness if you need to clean more often. Descaling is needed sooner in hard water. Using filtered water reduces mineral build-up, and some Cuisinart makers have built-in filters and a Clean function that signals when to descale.
