What gets washed and what stays dry
| Part | How | What Baratza says |
|---|---|---|
| Hopper, lid and grounds bin | Warm soapy water, rinse, air dry. By hand only. | Not dishwasher safe (Encore and Sette 30 manuals). |
| Burrs and grind adjustment parts | Brush dry. Never wash. | Water makes the burrs rust. |
| Grinder housing | Wipe, never submerge. | Do not immerse the housing in water (Encore). |
| Oily residue inside | Grinder cleaning tablets, per the tablet maker's directions. | Tablets absorb oils and scent. They will not clear a clogged grinder (Sette 30). |
These two Baratza manuals are the maker sources we read; other makers' steps differ, so use your manual. Last checked 2026-11-04.
Step by step
- Unplug the grinder and empty the hopper. Run it to clear any beans left inside.
- Wash the hopper, lid and bin. Warm soapy water, then rinse and let them air dry.
- Brush the burrs. Use the included brush, dry. Baratza says about once a month with daily use (Encore), or every few months with a stiff brush (Sette 30).
- Use tablets when the coffee is oily or flavoured. Sette 30 manual: empty the hopper, add the recommended tablets, set the macro adjust to 20, run until empty, then grind about 30 g of coffee and discard it.
- Reassemble when everything is dry. Check the hopper locks in; the Encore will not start without it.
Blade grinders and other brands
We have no maker source for blade grinders or for the Cuisinart grinder behind the old links to this page, so we give no steps for them. Use the manual. If you are choosing between types, read burr vs blade grinders. If you grind a dose at a time, single dose grinders explains why cleaning matters there.
