Four drip coffee makers we chose, by job

What to look for in a drip coffee maker

Three choices decide most of it. Carafe: glass sits on a warming plate (the Cuisinart lets you set it low, medium or high), while a thermal carafe is insulated, as on the OXO and Bonavita. Batch size: a 14-cup pot is a poor fit for one mug. Timer: only the Cuisinart lists a 24-hour program; the other three do not.

After you buy

Measure the coffee: our drip coffee ratio guide and the coffee to water ratio calculator give grams for the pot size. Grind size matters too: see the grind size chart. Clean the machine with descaling a drip coffee maker, checking your manual first.
