Capsule and portafilter machines side by side

We read the makers' own US product pages on 2026-11-04. We compare how the machines work and what the makers state, not the taste of the cup. "Not stated" means the page does not say.

Care and descaling

Both need descaling. For Nespresso, the guides we read say to use the Nespresso descaling kit and warn that vinegar may cause damage, with steps by model on our Nespresso descaling mode page. For a Breville Barista Express, see how to descale it, and for general care, how to clean and descale an espresso machine.

A portafilter machine adds daily jobs: rinse the portafilter and basket, empty the drip tray and brush the group head. If you go that route, buy a burr grinder (see burr vs blade grinders) unless the machine has one. Comparing two portafilter brands instead? Read Breville vs De'Longhi.
